| The Manhasset-Lakeville
Fire Department has operated ambulances for almost 100
years. Initially, the Department purchased and operated
ambulances intending only to provide medical care and
transportation for the Department's own firefighters and
families.
Over the years, however, with the ever-increasing need
for pre-hospital emergency care and subsequent increase
in calls specifically for the ambulance, the Department
realized that the official structure of a company designed
specifically for handling the growing task was necessary.
The Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department's Ambulance Unit
was formed in 1988. It started with 22 members and one
ambulance that the department already owned. Their first
new ambulance went out to bid in December of 1989, and
was delivered the following April.
The Ambulance Unit's first Line Officers were President
Barbara Hicks, Secretarty/Treasurer Steve Gerardi, Lieutenant
Frank McCarton and Sergeant Patrick Hicks. In 1991, the
Department purchased another ambulance, which was a used
1988 Horton from the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company.
This ambulance was replaced in 1998 with a newer ALS ambulance.
In 1997, the Department changed the ranks of the Officers
of the Ambulance Unit from Lieutenant, Sergeant and Corporal
to Captain, 1st Lieutenant and 2nd Lieutenant.
Today, the M-LFD Ambulance Unit not only responds to
all working fires and rescue calls within the district,
but also responds to emergency medical calls from the
Nassau County 9-1-1 system, and through our own emergency
hotline.
Currently, the Ambulance Unit operates two identical
PL Custom E450 Type III ambulances, designated 8767 and
8769. They are both BLS/ALS equipped, and carry the most
current medical equipment available today. The Ambulance
Unit also responds with a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe "Fly-Car."
The Fly-Car (8799) is utilized to improve response times
as well as to provide additional equipment and manpower
resources at major incidents.
The Ambulance Unit responded to almost 800 ambulance
calls in 2005. |
