On Sunday 1/14/2001
at about 2:00 PM, the Great Neck Vigilants toned out with
a signal 10 working fire at 48 Middleneck Road. Upon arrival,
units found a well-developed fire that had already spread
up an internal staircase from the basement to the first
and second floors of two 2-story retail store buildings.
The Great Neck Alerts were called in mutual aid as well
as MLFD Company 4 for TL8744. E8746 was en route to stand
by at the Alerts HQ when it was also sent to the scene
for manpower and hose lines. MLFD Company 2 ended up standing
by at the Alert FD for all other alarms in Great Neck.
During the course of the multi-hour fire, a ladder pipe
was used on the roof, a deck gun was used in one store
area and several 2.5" lines were used in the other
store. Units remained on scene until well into the evening
(around 9:00 PM). MLFD Deputy Chiefs 8703, 8701 and 8704
worked with IC Vigilant 1st Ass't Chief 839 and 2nd Ass't
Chief 8310.
