On Sunday, January 20th, 2002
at 1900 hours, M-LFD Companies 4 and 5 were toned out to the
residence at 2 Fairway Drive (LIE North Service Road)
in the Village of Lake Success.
As Deputy Chief Morris (8701)
responded, he was advised by dispatch that Lake Success
PD units on scene were reporting a "working house
fire." DC8701 had the call re-toned as a Signal 10,
which brought in Heavy Rescue 8730, the M-LFD Ambulance Unit and Company #1 as a F.A.S.T. Team.
Upon arrival, units found heavy fire in the basement
area with extension up the rear exposure through the first
floor all the way to the roof of a split level house.
DC8701 set-up the command post outside and was
assisted by Deputy Chief O'Malley (8702). Ex-Chief Gieman had located the seat
of the fire in the basement, and interior command was
assumed by Deputy Chiefs Strickland (8704) and Uttaro (8705).
Two 1 3/4"
hose lines were stretched to the basement by the crews
of Engine 8746 (Lt. Pitzer & Capt. Dolan) and Engine 8758 (Capt.
Stone). The crew of Tower Ladder 8744 (Lt. Katramados) opened up
the roof on the rear of the right peak and an additional hose
line was stretched to the rear yard.
An aggressive interior attack confined the fire damage
to the right side of the residence. One dog was located and
removed from the residence, and a cat that had suffered
fatal smoke inhalation was also removed.
One firefighter with smoke inhalation was transported by
the M-LFD Ambulance Unit to North Shore University Hospital. Two firefighters
were treated for injuries at the scene. One with burns
to the back and neck and another with burns where the
upper thigh meets the lower back.
After overhauling the basement, units were released from
the scene by 2130 hours. The Nassau County Fire Marshal's
office investigated at the scene. The fire appeared to
have been due to problems with electrical wiring in the
basement. |
