On Tuesday, March 11th, 2003 at 0230 hours, Great Neck Vigilant FC dispatcher Ed Canfield began receiving multiple calls on the direct M-LFD fire line and via FireCom reporting a building fire with possible occupants trapped at 2 West Mill Drive in the Great Neck Terrace Apartments in Zone 4.
The first M-LFD Unit to repond was Deputy Chief Strickland (8704), who was advised that NCPD units at scene were confirming a working building fire. DC8704 arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and requested a Signal 10 be transmitted with Ambulances and a F.A.S.T. Team. A crew from Company #1 set up as the F.A.S.T. Team, and a crew from Company #5 set up and assisted in searches and overhaul.
Engine 8746 was the first engine to arrive at the scene and laid a 5" supply line and stretched a 1.75" hose line to the front door. Units found heavy fire self-venting out the window of one of the apartments on the exposure 2 side with heavy smoke throughout the building. The fire in the fully involved bedroom was knocked down with additional crews conducting searches via ground ladder and by going floor-to-floor. A 2nd line was stretched and a command post, with all five M-LFD Chiefs, was set up.
Two occupants of the fire building were transported to NUMC. A rehab. area for firefighters was established at the scene by the wife of Deputy Chief Morris (8701). After primary searches, secondary searches, lengthy overhaul and an investigation by the NC Fire Marshal and NCPD Arson Squad, M-LFD units went Signal 13 by 0615 hours.
