On Friday May 7th, 2004, at 0325 hours, M-LFD Companies 3 and 4 were toned out to a reported building fire at 477 Great Neck Road. Deputy Chief Dugger (8703) was the first unit to arrive at the scene and he advised of a sign fire in a commercial strip-type building with some extension into both a parapet wall and two retail stores. Units also faced a smoke condition in three adjacent stores. M-LFD Company #5 was requested to the scene for additional manpower.
The crew of Tower Ladder 8744 set up the tower ladder and pulled the sign and facade, while the crew of Engine 8735 went to the roof with saws and tools to check for extension and to open up the facade wall.
Remaining Crews (E8740, R8730, E8758 and E8755) charged hose lines and opened up the front areas of the two stores to extinguish areas where the fire had advanced laterally. A command post was set up with all four M-LFD Deputy Chiefs, and an ambulance from the GN Vigilant Fire Company responded to the scene to stand by and assist with rehab.
After more than two hours of extinguishing and overhaul, units cleared the scene at 0600 hours. |
