Working Apartment Fire - Zone 4
M-LFD Companies 4, 3, 1, 2, 5 & Ambulance Unit

On Thursday, September 9th, 2004 at 2030 hours, M-LFD Companies 3 and 4 were toned out to the apartment building at 37 Brompton Road off of South Middleneck Road. The first units to respond were Engines 8746 and E8735, as well as 1st Deputy Chief Strickland (8704).

Upon their arrival, units were advised by multiple residents that there was heavy smoke on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors of the 6-story building. After completing an initial search, crews advised DC8704 of smoke and fire in apartments 2-E, 3-E and 4-E.

At that time, the call was then re-toned as a Signal 10 working fire, which brought in an M-LFD FAST Team, the Ambulance Unit and three additional M-LFD Chiefs.

Multiple handlines were stretched off of E8735 and E8746 to extinguish the fire. The initial source appeared to be repair work in apartment 2-E, with the fire having run up a pipe chase through apartments 3-E and 4-E. A command post with Chief of Department Morris (8701) and Deputy Chiefs Strickland (8704), O'Malley (8702) and Uttaro (8705) was set up. Crews used thermal imaging cameras to confirm that any remaining hot spots were located during overhaul.

At one time, all six M-LFD Companies were operating at the scene, so C8701 requested neighboring departments including Great Neck Vigilant, Port Washington and New Hyde Park to stand by in M-LFD houses.

One M-LFD firefighter with a knee injury was transported by M-LFD ambulance to North Shore University Hospital. At that time, ambulances from the GNVFD and PWFD were sent to the scene. The Nassau County Fire Marshal was called in to investigate, and all M-LFD units cleared from the alarm by 2330 hours.
