On Monday, February
27th, 2006 at roughly 2250 hours, M-LFD Companies #3 and
4 were dispatched to a residence in Thomaston in Zone
4. The first units to respond were Deputy Chief Dugger
(DC8703) and Chief of Department Strickland (C8704), who
were advised by Great Neck Vigilant Operator #8 that multiple
Nassau County PD units were on the scene reporting a working
house fire with all occupants removed from the residence.
Ladder 8743 was the first piece of apparatus to respond,
and was on the scene within minutes, followed shortly
by Engines 8746 and 8735. Upon arrival, heavy fire was
self-venting from three windows on the second floor on
the 1-4 corner of the residence.
E8746’s crew stretched an 1” ¾ hand
line to a bedroom on the second floor which contained
a heavy fire load. Fire was extending to the attic through
the walls, and once water was flowing on the fire, L8743’s
crew worked their way up to the attic with an additional
1” ¾ hand line off of Engine 8746. In the
attic there was extension to the attic and crawlspace,
which was being used as an additional bedroom. While the
hand lines were in operation, L8743’s aerial ladder
was setup to the roof for ventilation and overhaul above
the second floor bedroom. An excellent stop was made by
the engine crews after what was an aggressive “push”
on the fire.
The M-LFD Ambulance Unit was called to the scene, as
well as Company #5 for a F.A.S.T. Team. The Great Neck
Vigilant Fire Company sent one ambulance to the scene
for additional support. M-LFD Companies #1 and 2 were
placed on stand-by in their quarters and responded to
an automatic alarm during the fire.
Chief of Department Strickland (8704) was running the
Command Post, with the help of Deputy Chiefs Dugger (8703)
and Uttaro (8705). The Nassau County Fire Marshal was
called to the scene for an immediate investigation. All
units were released from the scene at roughly 0130 hours
on Tuesday, February 28, 2006. |
