On Sunday, March
5th, 2006, at approximately 2245 hours, Companies 2 and
3 were toned out for a reported working structure fire
at a residence in Thomaston in Zone 3.
Deputy Chief O'Malley (DC8702) was the first unit on
the road and was advised by 830 that the NCPD was on the
scene reporting a fully-involved structure fire. DC8702
then requested that a Signal 10 be transmitted, which
brought in Rescue 8757 from Company #5 as the F.A.S.T.
Team, as well as the Ambulance Unit.
Upon the arrival of the first-due Engine, 8735, units
found heavy fire blowing out the basement, first floor
and second floor windows on all sides of the residence.
Units made entry and tried to make a push into the house
but were cut off by heavy fire conditions and had to go
to an exterior operation.
The fire initiated near the boiler in the basement and
quickly spread throughout the house via the interior staircase,
laundry chute (extended from the 2nd floor to the basement),
as well as all the ductwork. Numerous 1 3/4" hand
lines, as well as 2 1/2" handlines, were stretched
and operated on all exposures of the house. The fire was
knocked down within one hour of operation and extensive
overhaul was performed.
Companies 1 & 4 were put on stand-by during the initial
alarm, but were later brought to the scene after investigating
a report of smoke in the area at North Shore Hospital,
which was east of the fire location. The Great Neck Vigilant
Fire Company sent one ambulance to the scene in addition
to mutual aid from New Hyde Park FD to stand-by at Company
#5 in New Hyde Park, one ladder truck and one ambulance
from Port Washington FD and one engine from the Plandome
FD to stand-by at Company #1 in Manhasset. At one time
during the fire, all five M-LFD companies plus the Ambulance
Unit were operating on scene.
The Nassau County Fire Marshall was requested to the
scene for an immediate investigation. The Command Post
was being ran by Chief of Department Strickland (C8704)
as well as Deputy Chiefs O'Malley (DC8702), Uttaro (DC8705)
and Dugger (DC8703). One of the occupants of the residence,
who had gotten out prior to FD arrival, was transported
to Nassau University Medical Center by Ambulance 8769.
All fire units were released from the scene by 0245
hours on Monday, March 6th, 2006. |
