On Friday, June 1st, 2007 at roughly 1300 hours, M-LFD Companies 3, 4 and 5 were toned out to 6 Ohio Drive in the Lake Success Quadrangle. Deputy Chief Dugger (8703) was the first unit to respond to the alarm and was advised of an automatic alarm in the building. While en route to 6 Ohio Drive, the dispatcher advised DC8703 that they were receiving multiple calls for an apartment fire at 44 Terrace Circle in Zone 4. DC8703 instructed the dispatcher to have all Company 3, 4 and 5 units redirected to the reported fire.
Tower Ladder 8744 was the first unit to respond to 44
Terrace Circle, and 1st Lieutenant 4 advised all incoming
units of “smoke showing” upon their arrival.
The crew of TL8744 made entry to the apartment building
and was met with a heavy smoke condition. Upon reaching
the second floor landing, 1st Lieutenant 4 observed heavy
fire pushing out from Apartment 2H’s entrance and
at 1308 hours transmitted a Signal 10 for a working apartment
fire. 1st Lieutenant 4 also advised E8735 that a 1”
¾ hose line would be needed on the second floor
upon their arrival, while the crew from TL8744 began attacking
the fire with water cans.
The crew from TL8744 was able to contain the fire with multiple water cans while the crew of E8735 stretched a 1” ¾ hose line to the second floor. Once the hose line was placed into operation, all remaining fire was quickly knocked down. After the fire was extinguished, crews performed overhaul in the fire apartment and checked any adjoining apartments for extension. The Nassau County Fire Marshal was also notified for an immediate investigation.
Manhasset Command was setup by Chief of Department O’Malley (8702) with the help of Deputy Chiefs Dugger (8703) and Dillon (8701). The Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company provided a FAST Team to the scene and the M-LFD Ambulance Unit was also on the scene providing patient care to any involved occupants from the fire building. All units were released from the scene within one and half hours. |
