On Wednesday, June 6th, 2007, at around 1530 hours, M-LFD Companies 1 and 2 were toned out for the “smell of something burning” in the area of 263 Estates Terrace South in Manhasset. Chief of Department O'Malley (8702) was the first unit to respond, and was notified by dispatch that they were now receiving a call for a fuel spill at that location.
Upon the arrival of C8702, a Signal 10 was transmitted for a working fire at 289 Estates Terrace South. Heavy fire was auto-exposing from the garage of the residence at that location. Heavy Rescue 8730, the M-LFD Ambulance Unit and the Port Washington Fire Department (for a F.A.S.T. Team) were immediately toned out. Port Washington Rescue 8522 responded to the scene with Assistant Chiefs McDonough (8501) and Cole (8502).
Engine 8711 was on the scene within minutes, and quickly stretched a 1” ¾ hose line to the garage of the residence and began knocking down the main body of fire. A second 1” ¾ hose line was later stretched off of E8711 as a backup. Quint 8728 positioned itself in front of the residence and setup its aerial ladder to the roof of the residence. Crews performed extensive overhaul in the garage area, as well as checked the interior of the house for any extension, which was minimal.
During the fire, the remaining units of Company #3 were toned out to scene for additional manpower, and Companies 4 and 5 were placed on stand-by in their respective quarters. Manhasset Command was setup by Chief of Department O'Malley (8702) with assistance from Deputy Chiefs Uttaro (8705) and Dugger (8703). All units were released from the scene within one and half hours.
