Working House Fire
M-LFD Companies 3, 4, 2 & Ambulance Unit
Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company F.A.S.T.

On Monday, February 11th, 2008 at approximately 1540 hours, M-LFD Companies 2, 3, 4 and the Ambulance Unit were toned out to a reported house fire at 213 Garden Street in Zone 3. Deputy Chief Pitzer (8704) was the first unit to respond to the alarm, and was advised by the Great Neck Vigilant dispatcher that they was receiving multiple calls reporting a house fire, which was why the call had additional companies.

Upon the arrival of DC8704, a Signal 10 was immediately transmitted for working house fire with heavy smoke pushing from the exposure 3 side.  The majority of the fire was on the first floor, with extension up the walls to the second floor and minor extension in the attic.  Units stretched three 1 ¾ inch hose lines off of Engine 8735 and made a good push into the fire rooms.

The crew of Tower Ladder 8744 provided search and ventilation of the residence, as well as laddering and roof cutting via the tower ladder.  All five M-LFD Chiefs responded to the scene, with Chief of Department O’Malley (8702) assuming Incident Command.  Other units on scene included Heavy Rescue 8730, Ladder 8743, Quint 8728, Engine 8725, Engine 8740 and Ambulances 8769 and 8767.

The Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company was called for a F.A.S.T., and responded with Chiefs 838 and 8310, and Ladder 8312. Unfortunately, multiple animals perished in the fire and the ASPCA was called to the scene. The Nassau County Fire Marshal was also called to the scene for an immediate investigation.

The fire was placed under control within two hours and all units were released shortly thereafter.
