Working House Fire
M-LFD Companies 4, 3, 5 & Ambulance Unit
Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company F.A.S.T.

On Thursday, March 20th, 2008 at 0450 hours, M-LFD Companies 3 and 4 were toned out to 32 Linford Road in the Village of Russell Gardens.  Deputy Chief Pitzer (8704) was the first unit to respond to the alarm, and was advised by 830 that they were receiving multiples calls for a house fire with people trapped, and that NCPD was on scene confirming a working fire.

Once hearing this information, Deputy Chief Pitzer (8704) requested that a Signal 10 be transmitted for a working house fire.  DC8704 arrived on the scene a minute later and informed the dispatcher that he had heavy fire on the first floor of a 2 ½-story private dwelling.  Engine 8740 was the first piece of apparatus on the road and arrived on the scene within a minute of responding.  A 1” ¾ hose line was stretched to the front door of the residence, and a quick and aggressive interior attack was used to contain and knockdown the fast spreading fire.  Two additional 1” ¾ hose lines were stretched off of Engines 8740 and 8735.

The fire was placed under control by Deputy Chief Uttaro (8705) within forty five minutes and an extensive overhaul took place.  The fire was contained to the first floor of the residence.  Tower Ladder 8744 was setup and extended to the roof to check for extension to the attic crawlspace.  During the Signal 10, M-LFD Companies 1 and 2 were placed on stand-by in their firehouses.  M-LFD Company #5 responded to the scene with Engine 8758.

The Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company responded with a F.A.S.T. truck to the scene.  Multiple mutual aid ambulances responded to the scene from the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company, and Port Washington and New Hyde Park Fire Departments.  M-LFD units remained on the scene with the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office until 0800 hours.

On a side note, before the M-LFD’s arrival, the NCPD successfully rescued three children and two adults from a second floor window.  The aided were transported to Nassau County Medical Center for smoke inhalation and inhalation burns by NCPD A2356, A2366 and M-LFD A8767.
