On Wednesday, October 29th, 2008 at 0954 hours, M-LFD Companies 1, 2 and 3 were toned out by Great Neck Vigilant Operator #5 to “Next to 8 Buckingham Place”. Deputy Chief Dillon (8701) was the first unit to respond, and was advised by Op #5 that a call was received through FireCom by a neighbor stating that the house next door was on fire.
Deputy Chief Dillon (8701) was the first unit to arrive on the scene, and after a quick size-up requested that a Signal 10 be transmitted for working fire on the second floor of a 2 ½ story private dwelling. Engine 8740D and Engine 8711 were the first pieces of apparatus on the road, and upon Engine 8711’s arrival, water cans were used to contain the fire, which was located in a bathroom on the second floor, while an 1” ¾ hose line was stretched. Once the line was in place and charged, the fire was quickly extinguished. Portable ladders were setup and overhaul was performed by the crews of Quint 8728 and Tower Ladder 8724.
The fire was placed under control within twenty five minutes, and all units were released from the scene within an hour. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office was notified for an immediate investigation. Manhasset Command was setup by Deputy Chiefs Dugger (8703) and Pitzer (8704). The Port Washington F.D. responded as a F.A.S.T. with Rescue 8522, AC8501 and AC8502.
During the fire, Engine 8735, Ladder 8743, PWFD Rescue 8522 and AC8502 (redirected as per DC8703) responded to a natural gas leak in Zone 1 on Gaynor Avenue. National Grid was notified for a heavy odor coming from the street. |
