On Saturday February 23rd, 2019 at approximately 1134am Manhasset-Lakeville Dispatch (870) alerted Companies 3, 4 and 5 to respond to a reported apartment fire at 200 South Middle Neck Road in Great Neck. DC8702 (Weisburd), Engine 8725 (returning to quarters from a training) and Engine 8740 were all on the road within a minute of the alarm and were advised by dispatch they had received a 911 call from FireCom reporting a dryer fire that was extending to the apartment.
Upon Deputy Chief Weisburd’s arrival he reported smoke showing from the 2nd floor of a 3 story garden apartment that was set back in a courtyard behind another apartment building. Engine 8740 arrived as the 1st due Engine and secured a hydrant in front of the complex. The officer of Engine 8740 entered the apartment and located a dryer fire that had extended to the kitchen of the apartment. At this time he requested the crew of Engine 8740 stretch a 2.5” reduced to 1.75” attack line into the apartment. Upon hearing this information, Deputy Chief Weisburd requested a “Signal 10-Working Fire” dispatched adding the Ambulance Unit and Great Neck Alert Ladder 826 as a FAS Team.
The crew of Engine 8740 advanced one attack line into the apartment to extinguish the dryer and kitchen fire while the crew of Engine 8725 assisted with opening up the kitchen to check for fire extension and ventilation. The crew of Ladder 8744 conducted searches of the floor above, checked for fire extension and secured utilities.
